Majority Leader Steny Hoyer said Tuesday he’s never seen an administration fire more officials than President Trump, and warned it could leave him with a dangerous echo-chamber.
“I think it is the most unstable administration, the most White House-centric administration,” the Maryland Democrat told reporters on Tuesday. “I think it’s a dangerous phenomena to have so much turn over.”
His comments come just days after Homeland Security Secretary Kristjen Nielsen announced her resignation and Ronald D. Vitiello was pulled as the nominee to head U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement earlier this week. Many Democrats had called for Ms. Nielsen’s resignation or firing, but still expressed shock and dismay this weekend when the news came that her resignation had been accepted.
Democrats now say the chaos of losing her at the department, and the chance that Mr. Trump will look for someone even tougher, scares them.
Mr. Hoyer said the president doesn’t give much consideration to any advice or opinions that contradict his own “impulses.”
“He doesn’t like the law. That’s what he doesn’t like,” Mr. Hoyer said. “And he’s firing people that have determined they have to act within the confines of the law. I think that’s very dangerous, very undemocratic if you will.”
