Former presidential candidate Hillary Clinton said Tuesday that President Trump’s “Make America Great Again” slogan has been adopted by white nationalists as their own phrase.
“The white nationalists certainly think MAGA is a white nationalist slogan,” the New York Democrat wrote on Twitter.
She included a link to a HuffPost article about shooting suspect Brenton Harrison Tarrant, who is the alleged shooter in last month’s New Zealand mosque attacks, “extensively” following pro-Trump content online.
“’Make America Great Again’ has become more than a U.S. political slogan…it’s a symbol; a kind of political messaging that transcends the specifics of country and language,” the article described.
Mr. Tarrant wrote in his manifesto regarding his support for the president: “As a symbol of renewed white identity and common purpose? Sure. As a policymaker and leader? Dear god no.”
Mr. Trump said Mr. Tarrant was a part of a “small group of people that have very, very serious problems” and chastised the “fake news media” later for attempting to “blame” the president for the attack.
“The Fake News Media is working overtime to blame me for the horrible attack in New Zealand,” he tweeted. “They will have to work very hard to prove that one. So Ridiculous!”
Mr. Trump beat Mrs. Clinton in the 2016 presidential election.
