ALBANY, N.Y. (AP) - Democratic Gov. Andrew Cuomo says he supports legislative efforts to get President Donald Trump to release his state tax returns but only if the rules also apply to other elected officials in New York.

Cuomo told public radio’s WAMC on Tuesday that proposals in the Democrat-controlled Legislature seeking the release of Trump’s state tax return are too “political” and should be broadened to include state lawmakers and statewide elected officials.

The governor says doing so would give such legislation a better chance of surviving court challenges.

Cuomo’s office said Monday that the governor supported disclosure of tax returns but was concerned about a politicized process. His office later clarified his position as backing broader legislation to include other elected officials.

U.S. House Democrats have requested Trump release his tax returns to Congress.
