LITTLE ROCK, Ark. (AP) - Arkansas lawmakers are sending voters a proposal next year that would impose new restrictions on the ballot initiative process.
The Arkansas Senate on Monday approved by a 25-10 vote a House-backed plan to put the proposed constitutional amendment on the 2020 ballot. The measure doesn’t require the governor’s signature.
The measure would require petitions for proposed initiatives to be filed with the state by Jan. 15 of the election year rather than four months before the election. It also eliminates a 30-day “cure period” that campaigns had been given to gather additional signatures after submitting their petitions.
It would require challenges to ballot measures be filed by April 15 of an election year. It would also require a three-fifths vote in the House and Senate for any legislative-referred ballot measures.
