HAWTHORNE, Calif. (AP) - A Southern California police officer has been wounded in a shootout with a suspect who had a high-powered gun and was wearing military fatigues.
Hawthorne police Chief Michael Ishii says officers responded to a call Sunday morning about an armed man chasing a woman through the lobby of a Marriott. When officers arrived, Ishii says they saw the man running across the street toward a shopping center.
When officers confronted him, Ishii says the man immediately began firing, prompting them to return fire. Police soon after found the man with a gunshot wound and arrested him.
Ishii says one officer was shot in the leg and was in surgery.
Ishi says the suspect was a guest at the Marriott and that officers were getting a warrant to search his room.
