HARTFORD, Conn. (AP) - Connecticut social workers are taking part in a unique role-playing exercise to learn how to help prevent infant deaths.

The state Department of Children and Families has set up a house on the grounds of the state Veterans Home and Hospital in Rocky Hill that will serve Monday as a “simulation lab.”

DCF workers are trained in the lab how to recognize certain scenarios - such as an infant sleeping in a parent’s bed - which can lead to tragedy.

The scenarios are set up by the child-protection organization FAVOR, whose members play the role of the family.

DCF officials say the role-playing exercises are intended to teach staff how to interact most effectively with families and achieve the best outcomes for their children.
