TUSCALOOSA, Ala. (AP) - More than 300 workers will be laid off from three automotive suppliers in west Alabama, state officials said.
Faurecia Seating intends to lay off 118 workers from its plant in Cottondale beginning May 31, the Alabama Department of Commerce announced recently.
The Faurecia Seating plant has provided automotive interior systems, including instrument panels, consoles and seating for Mercedes-Benz, Nissan and Volkswagen since 2011. It employed about 600 workers as of 2017, The Tuscaloosa News reported.
In 2015, Faurecia laid off 138 workers, citing poor market conditions.
Another firm, Eberspacher in Northport, will lay off 127 workers beginning June 7, officials said. Eberspacher North America has supplied exhaust systems for Mercedes since 2003. As of 2017, the plant employed 264, the newspaper reported.
Also, Inteva Products will lay off 56 from its Cottondale plant beginning June 5. That company, formerly Delphi Packard Electric Systems, supplies automotive wiring assemblies and has operated in Cottondale since 1995. The plant employed 305 workers as of 2017, the Tuscaloosa paper reported.
The notifications of the layoffs are required under the federal Worker Adjustment and Retraining Notification Act. The law was passed in 1988 to protect employees, their families and communities by providing at least two months’ notice of plant closings and mass layoffs.
