GRIFFIN, Ga. (AP) - Georgia authorities have released the name of the inmate who died in custody at the Spalding County jail.

The Atlanta Journal-Constitution reports 44-year-old Denver Charles Perkins died about 2 p.m. Friday after deputies were made aware of “an inmate in distress.” The jail’s medical personnel and deputies administered first aid to Perkins, who was taken to WellStar Spalding Regional Hospital and pronounced dead.

A cause of death has not been released.

Sheriff’s Office spokesman Capt. Dwayne Jones says Perkins was awaiting trial for child molestation and aggravated sexual battery charges.

The Georgia Bureau of Investigation is handling the investigation into Perkins’ death.
