Robert Griffin III re-signed with the Baltimore Ravens to be their backup quarterback last month, but in a recent podcast, the 29-year-old revealed he almost had an opportunity to be with a different team in 2018.
Griffin, per CBS Sports, said the Jacksonville Jaguars tried to trade for him twice last season, once at the end of the preseason and again before the trade deadline.
“… We knew that was an opportunity and there’d be a chance (to sign there) if things didn’t work out with Nick Foles,” Griffin told “The Lounge Podcast,” the Ravens’ team podcast.
The Jaguars signed Foles, the MVP of Super Bowl LII, to a four-year, $88 contract this offseason in an attempt to address their glaring need at quarterback.
Last season, Jacksonville went 5-11 in part because of terrible play at the position. Starter Blake Bortles was benched and backup Cody Kessler wasn’t much better.
If the Jaguars had traded for Griffin, it would have been likely the former Redskins quarterback would have received a chance to start.
Griffin hasn’t started a regular season game since 2016, when he went 1-4 as a starter for the Cleveland Browns.
