South Bend Mayor Pete Buttigieg said Thursday he has “a special announcement” planned for April, which is likely his official candidacy for the 2020 presidential election.
“Join me in South Bend on April 14th for a special announcement,” the Indiana Democrat tweeted along with a promotional video.
Mr. Buttigieg has not officially entered the presidential race and instead started a presidential exploratory committee in January.
In that time, the Indiana mayor has gone from an unknown name to a rising presence in the Democratic field despite not being an official candidate.
He announced on Monday his first quarter donations were more than $7 million, and he came fifth in a recent 2020 presidential candidate poll, tying him with Sen. Elizabeth Warren of Massachusetts at 4 percent support and beating out Sens. Cory Booker of New Jersey, Amy Klobuchar of Minnesota and Kirsten Gillibrand of New York.
