CENTRAL FALLS, R.I. (AP) - A federal judge has ruled that the board overseeing a Rhode Island detention center can’t break its contract with U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement and must allow the center to continue holding federal detainees.

The Providence Journal reports Tuesday that U.S. Chief Judge William Smith granted a preliminary injunction request from the trustees of the Wyatt Detention Facility in Central Falls.

Bondholders sued the city of Central Falls and the Detention Facility Corp. to block the removal of federal detainees from the facility.

The facility’s board of directors voted earlier this month to temporarily suspend its contract with ICE and asked that all ICE detainees be removed from the facility.

The judge also appointed a monitor to supervise future board action and to report back to the center’s trustees.
