Former Vice President Joseph R. Biden, a Democratic presidential candidate, weighed in Tuesday about the contested issue of impeaching President Trump based on special counsel Robert Mueller’s obstruction of justice investigation.
“[Mueller] was not within his purview to investigate, he thought. The Congress is attempting to take that up. What the Congress should do, and they are doing, is investigating that, and if in fact, they block the investigation, they have no alternative to go to the only other constitutional resort they have … impeachment,” the Delaware Democrat said during an interview with ABC’s “Good Morning America.”
“But my job is to ensure he’s not back as president of the United States,” he added.
Democratic presidential candidates Sen. Elizabeth Warren of Massachusetts and Rep. Eric Swalwell of California both endorsed impeachment, with many of the other candidates either giving no opinion or saying they would rather beat Mr. Trump in 2020.
Democrats have been divided on whether to support impeachment after Mr. Mueller’s redacted report concluded that Mr. Trump’s team did not collude with Russia to win the 2016 election but that the president’s attempts to obstruct the investigation could be seen as problematic.
