Democratic presidential candidate Sen. Bernard Sanders is calling on Disney to use its profits from the smash box-office hit “Avengers: Endgame” to pay all employees a living wage.
Mr. Sanders on Monday criticized the gap between Disney CEO Bob Iger’s fiscal 2018 pay and that of his employees.
“What would be truly heroic is if Disney used its profits from Avengers to pay all of its workers a middle class wage, instead of paying its CEO Bob Iger $65.6 million – over 1,400 times as much as the average worker at Disney makes,” the Vermont senator, a democratic socialist, tweeted.
In the same tweet, Mr. Sanders linked to a Bloomberg article about “Avengers: Endgame” shattering box-office records with a $1.22 billion debut worldwide.
“The success of the film prompted analysts to expect a much larger contribution from the studio division to the company’s overall profit, and it is also seen as a positive sign as the Dow component prepares to launch its Disney+ streaming service,” the Bloomberg article stated. “Shares of Disney gained as much as 1.8 percent in the stock’s fifth straight daily gain, though it subsequently pared its initial bounce.”
