OPINION:
Contrary to current popular opinion and political correctness, I have always been an advocate of the death penalty for those who have committed heinous crimes. This belief has been reinforced now by the brutal murder last week of Samantha Josephson, who was murdered after getting into a car she mistook for her Uber (“Ride share mistake led to college student’s death, police say,” Web, March 31).
There is no mitigating excuse for this crime and the continuing living of her murderer is a blot on our justice system. The punishment should be swift for such a crime, but unfortunately true justice is not administered in most states, as the murderer gets to serve a prison sentence, thus denying closure to the family of the victim.
Incidentally, the same could be said for Israel, which does not have the death penalty. There, murdering terrorists are allowed to serve a prison term with monetary benefit to his or her family and a possible future release on the horizon, in the form of a prisoner exchange.
