FRYBURG, N.D. (AP) - Crews are working to clean up a chemical spill at a rail terminal in Fryburg.

The North Dakota Department of Health says it’s closely monitoring the spill and working with local emergency responders. Andeavor Logistics says a leak in a holding tank spilled an estimated 200 to 600 gallons of ethyl mercaptan Sunday at the Fryburg Rail Loading Facility. The chemical, with a strong odor, is added to propane in order to detect any gas leaks.

Marathon Petroleum owns Andeavor Logistics. Spokesman Ron Day says people 30 miles away in Dickinson reported smelling the spilled chemical.

Health officials say an independent contractor is monitoring the air surrounding the facility.
