This has not been a good weekend at home for the Washington Nationals, who had already lost a series to the San Diego Padres for the first time in three years even before the first pitch was thrown Sunday afternoon.

Before Sunday’s game, the Nationals placed first baseman Ryan Zimmerman on the 10-day injured list with plantar fasciitis in his right foot. To take his place, the Nationals summoned right-handed pitcher Erick Fedde from Double-A Harrisburg.

Zimmerman, who is hitting .213, was replaced at first base on Sunday by lefty-hitting Matt Adams. Zimmerman went on the disabled list with plantar fasciitis in his left foot in 2015 when he played in 95 games. Zimmerman has not played in more than 145 games since 2009.

“He was dealing with it for a couple of days, but yesterday it got really bad,” manager Dave Martinez said. “He went and got an MRI this morning, and it revealed some inflammation. He’s got plantar fasciitis.”

Zimmerman got hit on the foot at first base on Tuesday by a sliding Mark Reynolds of the Rockies after Zimmerman got a throw from third baseman Howie Kendrick in Colorado.

Washington third baseman Anthony Rendon also was out of the lineup Sunday after he was hit by a pitch on the left arm the previous weekend in Miami. It was the sixth time in seven games Rendon was not in the starting lineup.

The Nationals were 11-14 going into Sunday’s game and they had a 7.34 bullpen ERA, the worst in the majors. Washington’s eighth-inning ERA is 9.72, last in the league and next-to-last in the majors.

“I have to close my eyes in the eighth inning,” a Nationals fan said on the way to his seat Sunday.

With a win Sunday, the Padres would sweep the Nationals in a series in D.C. for the first time in 11 years.
