ASHBURN — The Washington Redskins addressed another major need on the roster Friday, drafting Ohio State wide receiver Terry McLaurin with the 76th overall pick in the third round of the NFL draft.
In doing so, Washington reunited McLaurin with quarterback Dwayne Haskins, who the Redskins took 15th overall Thursday.
With Haskins throwing him the ball, McLaurin caught 35 receptions for 701 yards and 11 touchdowns in 2018. McLaurin is a 6-foot, 208-pound wideout with impressive speed, running a 4.35 40-yard dash at the NFL scouting combine.
Speaking to reporters, McLaurin said he was excited to join the Redskins.
“He actually told me he was going to push them to draft me,” McLaurin said when asked if he talked with Haskins on Thursday. ” And you know so much can happen on draft day, I didn’t necessarily put too much merit into it. But I thought it was a possibility, so I’m just honored to be a part of this great organization. “
Redskins senior vice president of player personnel Doug Williams said Washington needs a “go-to guy” at wide receiver. The group underwhelmed last season — with Josh Doctson leading the pack with only 532 yards.
Asked about his game, McLaurin said he sees himself as a deep threat that’s able to “take the top off of any defense.” He added he grew up watching DeSean Jackson and tried to emulate him.
McLaurin, who also contributes on special teams, said he didn’t discuss with the Redskins whether he would play inside or outside. At Ohio State, he was lined up at both spots.
“I don’t know where they’ll have me,” McLaurin said, “but I’m eager to work wherever.”
The Redskins were set to pick again in the third round, but they traded the 96th pick to the Buffalo Bills in exchange for No. 112 and 131.
