BROWNSVILLE, Texas (AP) - A state report shows a 42-year-old man being held last month in a Texas jail died after he fell and struck his head against a cement bench as guards attempted to restrain him.
The report on file with the Attorney General’s Office says guards at the Cameron County jail were attempting to move Gabriel Angulo Rivera from one cell to another when he became combative.
Guards were placing restraints on him March 25 when he fell against the bench. He later became unresponsive and was taken to a hospital where he died the next day.
Rivera was in jail on charges that included failing to appear in court on a drunken-driving charge.
Texas law requires that details of a person’s death while in custody be reported within 30 days to the Attorney General’s Office.
