PROVIDENCE, R.I. (AP) - The publisher of The Providence Journal in Rhode Island announced her retirement Tuesday during a gathering at the paper.

Janet Hasson has been the president and publisher of The Journal for the last four years of her 35-year career in newspapers.

The Journal reports that Peter Meyer is replacing Hasson as publisher.

Meyer is the publisher of the Cape Cod Times and heads the New England division of GateHouse Media, which also owns The Journal.

He says he will maintain his regional responsibilities but move his office to The Journal.

Before The Journal, 59-year-old Hasson was president and publisher of the Gannett-owned Journal News Media Group, in White Plains, New York.

She also worked at the Detroit News and the Detroit Free Press as senior vice president of audience development.
