President Trump said Wednesday the Supreme Court hearing arguments for and against a 2020 census citizenship question was a “really big deal.”
“The American people deserve to know who is in this Country. Yesterday, the Supreme Court took up the Census Citizenship question, a really big deal. MAKE AMERICA GREAT AGAIN,” the president tweeted.
The Supreme Court heard the arguments Tuesday and will issue a decision before the term ends in June.
The controversy surrounding the citizenship question started last year when Commerce Secretary Wilbur Ross said he would add it to the 2020 survey. He said the question was requested by the Justice Department, who wanted better data to enforce the Voting Rights Act.
Opponents of the question argue it would scare people away and provide an inaccurate count.
