Cindy McCain, the widow of late Sen. John McCain, refuted rumors Wednesday she would be supporting former Vice President Joseph R. Biden in his expected bid to run for president.
“Joe Biden is a wonderful man and dear friend of the McCain Family. However, I have no intention of getting involved in presidential politics,” Mrs. McCain tweeted.
The Washington Examiner reported earlier Wednesday that Mrs. McCain and her daughter, ABC’s “The View” co-host Meghan McCain, would endorse Mr. Biden’s campaign.
“They talk regularly and have been supportive of his run. The question is going to be timing and coordinating with the Biden campaign. … I wouldn’t expect a formal family endorsement because some of McCain’s family is still in the military, but I do expect Cindy to speak out at some point,” said a source, who cited he was a former McCain campaign official with close ties to the family.
Mr. Biden is reportedly poised to announce his official candidacy for the 2020 Democratic presidential nomination Thursday.
Both Mrs. McCain and her daughter Meghan have been outspoken against Mr. Trump, who has carried on a feud against Mr. McCain even after the Arizona senator’s passing.
Mr. Trump said during a speech in March he was “never a fan” of John McCain.
Cindy McCain declined to comment on who she would be voting in the 2020 election, calling Mr. Trump’s rhetoric “hurtful” and adding she doesn’t “even know if [Trump’s] gonna run.”
Meghan McCain has blasted the president multiple times on Twitter and on her TV show, calling him “pathetic” in March for going on a Twitter tear against her father, adding he “will never be a great man.”
