Everything is on the line Wednesday night.

Every other first-round series in the Stanley Cup Playoffs has been decided except for the Washington Capitals and Carolina Hurricanes’ seven-round bout, so the District will be the center of the hockey world tonight. The winner takes on the New York Islanders in the conference semifinals.

Will the defending Cup champions fall or advance to the second round? Here’s what you need to know before the game.

Opponent: Carolina Hurricanes (series tied 3-3)

Where: Capital One Arena, Washington, D.C.

When: Wednesday, April 24, 7:30 p.m.

TV channel: NBC Sports Network, NBC Sports Washington

Radio: 106.7 The Fan

What to watch for: This will be the 12th career Game 7 for both Alex Ovechkin and Nicklas Backstrom, one shy of tying the all-time record and the most ever for a pair of teammates. They are 4-7 in their first 11 games … Carolina’s Justin Williams, formerly of the Capitals and Kings, holds the NHL record with 14 career points in Game 7s (and seven goals, which is tied for the record). … The last time Washington played a Game 7, it was on the road at Tampa Bay, where the Capitals vanquished the Lightning 4-0 to win their second-ever Eastern Conference title. … Andrei Svechnikov and Micheal Ferland, two injured forwards, might be ready to play for the Hurricanes in Game 7. Neither has played since Game 3.
