COON RAPIDS, Minn. (AP) - The Minnesota Bureau of Criminal Apprehension says three law enforcement officers fired their weapons in the fatal shooting of a man in Coon Rapids.

The Midwest Medical Examiner’s Office has identified the man who died as 40-year-old John Duane Fairbanks, of Cass Lake. He died of multiple gunshot wounds following a traffic stop April 18.

Police say officers believed Fairbanks posed a deadly threat to them and opened fire. The BCA says crime scene personnel recovered a handgun next to Fairbanks’ body.

The three officers who fired their weapons, Alex Hattstrom and Geoff Neumann, of the Coon Rapids police department and Anoka County Sheriff’s Deputy Christopher Vitek, are on standard administrative leave.

The BCA is conducting the investigation at the request of local police and the sheriff’s office.
