President Trump and first lady Melania Trump welcomed thousands of children and their families to the White House Monday for the annual Easter egg roll on the sun-splashed South Lawn.
“I want to wish everybody a very Happy Easter,” said the president, standing next to an oversized Easter Bunny. “This is 141 years that we’ve been doing this. I don’t remember the first one, but the last three years we’ve been having an awfully good time.”
More than 30,000 guests were expected to attend the daylong event, which is organized by the first lady’s office and incorporates her “Be Best” initiative. There is a station for children to send postcards to family, friends and members of the military.
Among the other features is a new game called “musical eggs,” an Easter version of musical chairs.
The jubilant president thanked the first lady, the White House Historical Society, the military, the Marine Band and even U.S. egg farmers.
“Our country is doing fantastically well, probably the best it’s ever done economically,” the president boasted “We’re setting records on stock markets, we’re setting records with jobs, and unemployment numbers are the lowest they’ve ever been … [lower] regulations, low taxes — our country has never done better.”
The president said of the U.S. armed forces, “And do we love our military! Our military is literally being completely rebuilt.”
