A former attorney for President Trump said Monday that special counsel Robert Mueller understood why the president repeatedly blasted his investigation and labeled it “a witch hunt.”

John Dowd, who was Mr. Trump’s attorney from June 2017 to March 2018, said the special counsel was not phased by the criticism.

“I talked to Bob [Mueller] about that and said, ’Do you understand what’s going on?” Mr. Dowd said in an interview with Fox News regarding Mr. Trump’s repeated lambasting of the Mueller probe.

“[Mr. Mueller] said, ’Oh, it’s political. He has to do that for political reasons,’” Mr. Dowd continued.

Mr. Dowd said in the interview that Mr. Mueller worried the constant criticism would scare off witnesses. So Mr. Dowd said he told the special counsel that Mr. Trump would publicly tell witnesses to cooperate with the probe.

Mr. Dowd left the administration last year amid repeated clashes with the president over whether he should sit down for an interview with Mueller.
