PROVIDENCE, R.I. (AP) - A legislative commission is recommending that adult education programs should be moved to the Department of Labor and Training.
A state Senate commission recently recommended relocating the administration of these programs from the Department of Elementary and Secondary Education to the Governor’s Workforce Board within the labor department.
The commission concluded that because adult learners’ needs are different than those of children, the move would better position them to gain the skills they need for today’s workforce.
Democratic Sen. Harold Metts, of Providence, led the 13-member commission, which also included representatives from the Department of Education, higher education, workforce development and agencies involved in adult education.
Metts plans to introduce legislation this week to permit the move, with a goal of completing it by the end of the year.
