ATLANTA (AP) - The Atlanta City Council’s newest member officially takes office on Monday.

The Atlanta Journal-Constitution reports businessman Antonio Brown will be sworn in as Atlanta’s District 3 councilman during a 12:30 p.m. ceremony at Atlanta City Hall.

Brown beat former Atlanta Public Schools board member Byron Amos in an election last week, garnering just over 53% of the vote. Political experts deemed the win somewhat of a surprise after he finished second to Amos in the special election last month that included 10 candidates.

The 34-year-old will fill the seat left vacant when Councilman Ivory Lee Young Jr. died late last year. Brown says he grew up in poverty and understands the district’s needs and wants to address issues like affordable housing and food deserts.
