ALBANY, N.Y. (AP) - A weeklong schedule of activities including hiking, fishing and tree-planting is planned to commemorate the 49th anniversary of Earth Day in New York state.

The Department of Environmental Conservation and partnering organizations are hosting events from Long Island to Buffalo through next weekend. A full schedule is posted on DEC’s website.

A neighborhood cleanup is planned in Troy on Monday. Trout stocking is scheduled at Albany’s Six Mile Water Works on Tuesday. A family nature fest will be held next Saturday at Rochester’s Seneca Park. And a weeklong schedule of events is planned at DEC’s Reinstein Woods Nature Preserve in Depew.

Earth Day was founded by U.S. Sen. Gaylord Nelson of Wisconsin in 1970 after he toured the devastation of the massive 1969 oil spill in Santa Barbara, California.
