Former FBI Director James B. Comey confirmed Tuesday that his announcement as a 2020 presidential candidate on Monday was an April Fools’ Day joke.

“I think we all need to laugh from time to time, especially today. If you don’t laugh, you’ll cry, and so I was just trying to be fun and prank people on April Fools’ Day,” he said in an interview with CNN’s “Right Now” show.

On Monday, Mr. Comey posted on Twitter a photo of him on a country road facing away from the camera with the caption, “I’m in. We need someone in the middle. #2020.”

The timing of the post immediately raised questions about his seriousness, and Mr. Comey himself has previously said he wouldn’t run — although he has emerged as a major critic of President Trump.
