LOS ANGELES (AP) - Los Angeles police say a recently released inmate has been arrested in the severe beating of his 9-month-old son in a luxury downtown apartment after following the baby’s mother home.

Twenty-nine-year-old Michael Freeman was booked just after midnight Friday on suspicion of attempted murder. KABC-TV reported that Freeman had recently been released from prison in Tennessee.

Police say Freeman followed the child’s mother into her apartment building Thursday night, grabbed the baby from her arms, ran into a vacant apartment and began beating him. The mother also reported that Freeman tried to strangle and drown the baby.

Arriving police say they saw him assaulting the baby and subdued him with a Taser stun gun before arresting him. The baby is in critical condition.

Freeman is being held on $1 million bail. It’s unclear if he has an attorney.
