GRIFFIN, Ga. (AP) - Georgia’s judicial watchdog agency has recommended that suspended Superior Court Judge Mack Crawford of the Griffin Judicial Circuit be removed from office for the alleged theft of court funds.
The Atlanta Journal-Constitution reports Thursday’s recommendation now goes to the Georgia Supreme Court, which will decide Crawford’s fate.
Crawford, a former state legislator, has already been indicted for the alleged incident and has pleaded not guilty.
In March, a Pike County court clerk told the district attorney Crawford asked for a check from the registry for funds pertaining to a 2002 case in which Crawford served as a private attorney. Court records indicate he used the funds to pay off personal debts instead of returning the money to his clients.
Crawford presides over cases in Fayette, Spalding, Pike and Upson counties.
