The Washington Redskins signed defensive end Matt Ioannidis to a three-year contract extension worth $21.75 million, NFL Network reported Thursday.
Ioannidis was set to become a free agent after the 2019 season. Instead, Washington won’t let another team woo him away.
Just a fifth-round draft pick from Temple in 2016, Ioannidis has become a starter on the Redskins’ defensive line. He followed up a 4.5-sack year in 2017 with 7.5 sacks last season, as well as a forced fumble and a fumble recovery.
Ioannidis’ new deal also comes with another $3 million in incentives, according to NFL Network’s Mike Garafolo.
By locking him up, Washington likely preserves its starting defensive line of Ioannidis, Daron Payne and Jonathan Allen for the next several years.
