WILMINGTON, Del. (AP) - A corner store in Wilmington, Delaware, has reopened about a week after it was closed by the city over a nearby shooting that wounded six people.
The News Journal of Wilmington reports the doors of Bill’s Deli Market opened Tuesday to shouts of joy from waiting neighbors.
After the April 7 shooting, city Councilwoman Zanthia Oliver called the store a “carnival” for criminal behavior. It was cited several times this past year for nuisance issues.
But residents called it a haven, a place where employees babysit area kids and let customers settle tabs when their paychecks clear.
Authorities said the shop closed as a “public safety precaution.” It was given a week to provide abatement plans. An agreement between it and police includes shunning loiterers and discouraging criminal activity.
