TRAVERSE CITY, Mich. (AP) - The state is putting a new limit on lake trout caught in Grand Traverse Bay.
The daily possession limit is one instead of two, and it must be at least 15 inches long.
The change was approved last week because too many lake trout were caught in 2018. The Department of Natural Resources says the change is necessary to comply with a 2000 agreement between the state and Indian tribes.
Fisheries biologist Heather Hettinger says anglers probably will need to change their fishing strategy to avoid catching a second trout. She says 40% of lake trout typically don’t survive if they’re caught and released.
