BOSTON (AP) - Boston police were investigating a shooting Sunday that left two men dead in the Mattapan section of Boston, the same neighborhood where a 74-year-old innocent bystander was shot and killed a week ago in a triple shooting,
Officers were called shortly after 11 p.m. on Saturday to Violet Street, a residential area, for a report of a person shot. When police arrived, they discovered two male victims, both in their late 40s, suffering from apparent gunshot wounds. They were transported to local area hospitals, where they were pronounced dead. Their names have not yet been released publicly.
Police said they’re actively investigating the incident and asked anyone with information to contact homicide detectives.
The two deaths come about one week after a 74-year-old retired hospital worker and grandmother, Eleanor Maloney, was shot and killed in a triple shooting near her Mattapan home. Two men at the scene with gunshot sounds suffered non-life-threatening injuries.
“When you have a situation where an elderly woman gets killed in front of her house, enough is enough. Enough is enough,” Boston Mayor Marty Walsh told reporters following Maloney’s death. “I’m not going to make apologies for people anymore. You have to step up and take responsibility for your life.”
One of the two men allegedly involved in the April 6 shootout was the victim’s grandson, 37-year-old Anthony Davis. He was charged with illegal gun possession and being an armed career criminal. The Boston Globe reported Davis pleaded not guilty at his hospital room and was ordered held on $50,000 cash bail.
On Sunday, Mattapan residents described to the Globe a neighborhood that’s both close-knit and “sometimes rough.”
Sophonia Lucien said she heard seven gunshots before police and EMTs arrived at the scene. She then described hearing the screams of bystanders as a Boston police officer performed CPR on an injured man who was “bleeding out severely.” She said a second man was loaded into an ambulance that was parked in the middle of the road.
Boston police said Saturday’s shootings on Violet Street marked the city’s 10th and 11th homicides this year.
