KIRKLAND, Wash. (AP) - Ground has been broken for a permanent shelter in western Washington for homeless women and families.

The Seattle Times reports in a story on Saturday that local leaders recently broke ground for the shelter in Kirkland.

Linda Benson of The Sophia Way says having a permanent shelter could save lives.

Authorities say a woman died in January outside a Kirkland church with a closed shelter, apparently going there expecting to find the shelter to be open.

Officials say that when the new shelter opens in 2020, it will be the first 24-hour permanent site for adult women and families in that area.
