MARBLEMOUNT, Wash. (AP) - Skagit County officials have reopened public comment on a proposal for rock mining east of Mount Vernon.

The Skagit Valley Herald reports public comment on various permits for the project will be open until 4:30 p.m. May 13.

Kiewit Infrastructure Co. and Cunningham Crushing propose mining 3.8 million cubic yards (2.9 million cubic meters) of rock from a 79-acre (32-hectare) portion of a rock hill southwest of Marblemount.

The proposal has been met with opposition from many area residents who are worried about their safety and the environment.

Skagit County initially accepted public comment March 14-29. Many who submitted letters asked for additional time to review the proposal.

Several tribes, environment groups and utilities such as Seattle City Light have also raised concerns about the potential impacts of the project.

Kiewit Infrastructure declined comment and Cunningham Crushing hasn’t responded to requests for comment.
