STONY BROOK, N.Y. (AP) - Gov. Andrew Cuomo says the recently approved state budget will pump billions of dollars into mass transit upgrades, biotechnology research development and other projects on Long Island.

The Democrat on Thursday told a Stony Brook University audience that there’s $18.6 billion for Nassau and Suffolk counties included in the $175.5 billion budget the Legislature passed April 1.

Cuomo says some of the funding will go toward new tracks for the Long Island Rail Road, while schools in the two counties will get $3.3 billion in school aid, a nearly 4% increase.

The governor says millions more will be spent to develop a “research triangle” that includes Stony Brook, one of the state university system’s four main campuses.

Cuomo typically tours the state after the budget’s passage to discuss highlights for each region.
