RALEIGH, N.C. (AP) - Uber, Lyft and other ride-sharing company drivers in North Carolina would have to display illuminated logo signs with their vehicles in bipartisan legislation proposed after the death of a South Carolina student last month.
House Majority Leader John Bell and the chambers’ Democratic leaders unveiled at a Thursday news conference the measure expected to be heard next week. Bell says it follows legislation the South Carolina House approved on Wednesday.
Police said University of South Carolina student Samantha Josephson got into what she thought was her Uber ride without checking the license plate or having the driver say her name. Authorities say the driver trapped Josephson, who was later killed.
The measure also requires ex-drivers to return signage and companies to alert state regulators when they don’t.
