Sen. Bernard Sanders’ presidential campaign said Thursday it ready for a fight with The White House over Medicare for all, saying President Trump has proven to be a puppet for the insurance and drug companies.

“This campaign’s message to Trump is simple: we welcome this fight because we are going to defeat you in the election and guarantee health care as a right to all people,” said Sanders’ campaign manager Faiz Shakir.

A White House spokesperson on Wednesday panned the latest Medicare for all plan that Mr. Sanders rolled on Capitol Hill, saying it amounted to a “total government takeover of health care that would actually hurt seniors, eliminate private health insurance for 180 million Americans and crippled our economy and future generations with unprecedented debt.”

The White House said Mr. Trump is working on a “realistic solution” that would cover pre-existing conditions and reduce the cost of care and prescription drugs.

Mr. Shakir countered that Mr. Trump has already shown his true colors on the issue.

“Donald Trump, who used to express his admiration for single-payer health care, has decided to put out statements that do the bidding of the largest insurance and pharmaceutical companies,” Mr. Shakir said. “Trump is defending industries of greed that throw millions of Americans off their health coverage while paying health industry CEOs more than $1 billion in a single year.”
