WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. (AP) - North Carolina’s largest city is getting a medical school thanks to a partnership between a medical center and a health care system.
The Winston-Salem Journal reports Wake Forest Baptist Medical Center and Atrium Health announced Wednesday that they will establish a second four-year medical school in Charlotte. The two systems said the Charlotte medical school could educate nearly 3,200 students - including medical students, residents and fellows - across more than 100 specialized training programs each year.
The two groups did not disclose a potential cost of creating the medical school and what kind of academic and support workforce it would require.
The partnership could lead to a second research park campus in Charlotte similar to what Wake Forest Baptist has created in downtown Winston-Salem with Wake Forest Innovation Quarter.
