Democratic presidential candidate Sen. Kirsten Gillibrand blasted President Trump Tuesday, calling him “weak,” “demeaning” and a “coward.”
When asked why she kicked off her presidential campaign with a rally in front of Trump Tower in New York, she said it “represents to me, greed, it represents a narcissism, and a sense of entitlement that is so significant, you just have to speak truth to that power.”
“Because this president is one of the most cowardly, demeaning presidents we’ve ever had. He is somebody who demonizes women, people of color, he has said racist statements, he has said anti-Semitic statements, he is against freedom of religion with his Muslim ban, he has divided us on every type of line you could possibly imagine, and I wanted to talk about what it actually means to stand up for what’s right, to do what’s right especially when it’s hard,” she said in her CNN town hall.
She added Mr. Trump “punches down, he demeans the vulnerable. He is not brave. He wants us to believe he’s strong, that’s why he puts his name on every building, he wants us to believe that he is powerful. Well, he is not. He is weak, and he is a coward, and that’s why I wanted to have that speech there.”
The same week of her campaign launch, Ms. Gillibrand became the first 2020 presidential candidate to release her tax returns, saying she publicized 12 years of financial information to offer “transparency” to her campaign.
“I want voters to know that I am beholden to no one, that my values are not for sale, and that I am working only for you,” she said in an online video.
