Attorney General William P. Barr was hired to shut down special counsel Robert Mueller’s report and prevent it from seeing “the light of day,” a Democratic lawmaker said Monday.
“The fact that Mr. Mueller could not exonerate the president on obstruction leaves Mr. Barr to do exactly what he was hired to do: shut the investigation down and make sure that nobody sees the light of day of the Mueller report,” Rep. Mike Quigley, Illinois Democrat, said on MSNBC’s “Kasie DC” show. “If [President Trump is] exonerated, then just show us.
“For Mr. Barr to unilaterally take away the two years of work that the special counsel did and use the theory he already put together in applying for the job saying the theory was wrong, that makes it even more essential that the American public gets all of this information,” he added.
Mr. Barr’s four-page summary said Mr. Mueller exonerated Mr. Trump and his campaign from any collusion with Russia but chose to not make a determination on whether the president attempted to obstruct justice.
Mr. Barr and Deputy Attorney General Rod Rosenstein said the evidence of obstruction is not enough to pursue charges.
White House officials said they have not seen the full Mueller report, but Mr. Trump has said the findings show there was no collusion or obstruction and prove his “complete and total exoneration.”
The Democratic-led Judiciary Committee announced a vote Wednesday to issue subpoenas for not only the full Mueller report but the special counsel’s entire investigation.
