MEXICO CITY (AP) - Mexico’s top security official says he twice crossed illegally into the United States in his youth to work.

La Jornada newspaper reported Monday that Public Safety Secretary Alfonso Durazo told a business gathering in the northern state of Sonora that out of economic necessity he went to the U.S. to wash cars and dishes.

Durazo retweeted the newspaper’s account Monday. His office did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

President Donald Trump has threatened to close the border with Mexico this week unless Mexico stops the flow of immigrants to the U.S. border.

On Sunday, Mexico announced it would begin granting humanitarian visas again on a limited basis to some of the 2,500 Central American and Caribbean migrants currently in the southern state of Chiapas.
