Fired FBI Director James Comey seemed to confirm a presidential bid Monday, taking to Twitter on April 1 — April Fool’s Day — to say “I’m in,” and tagging his post “#2020.”

“We need someone in the middle,” Mr. Comey said in his tweet, which came alongside a photo of him standing in the middle of a two-lane country road, facing away from the camera.

The timing of the post immediately raised questions about his seriousness, and Mr. Comey himself has previously said he wouldn’t run — though he has emerged as a major critic of President Trump.

The post gave no hint of irony, and copied a style he used last month to question the release of the special counsel’s report. But Mr. Comey has also shown a knack for inserting himself into the political conversation, as he tries to remain in the spotlight and sell copies of his book.

Twitter users were conflicted on Mr. Comey’s intentions, with many laughing off his declaration and others taking it seriously — and critiquing his claims to be a middle-of-the-road figure.

Still, others wondered why Mr. Comey has a seemingly large supply of photos of himself out in the countryside staring pensively at nature.
