CALIFORNIA, Mo. (AP) - Moniteau County Sheriff Tony Wheatley says he has fired two employees for posting derogatory posts on social media.

Wheatley said in a news release Monday that jail employee Dillon Davenport and Lt. Kevin Morse were both fired after he became aware of the posts on Saturday.

The sheriff told KMIZ that the post involved making fun of people with disabilities.

Davenport is a jailer who has been with the department about six months. Wheatley says Morse was with the department for about 10 years.

The posts started as a joke between employees and Davenport’s mother but Wheatley said the “so-called” joke was in poor taste.

He says the posts caused a public outcry and he felt firing the two employees was the appropriate action.
