GLENDALE, Ariz. — The Washington Redskins saw two rookies leave their Week 1 game against the Arizona Cardinals, which could thin out the receiving corps in the worst-case scenario.
Trey Quinn and Cam Sims suffered ankle injuries Sunday, and neither returned to the game. Coach Jay Gruden said they will get MRIs tomorrow, but the team does not know the extent of either injury until then.
Maurice Harris missed Week 1 as he recovers from a concussion, so with Sims and Quinn out, the Redskins had just three wide receivers at their disposal the rest of the game.
Sims was hurt on the opening kickoff, a brutal moment for an undrafted free agent who made the 53-man roster after an impressive preseason.
Quinn stayed down after returning a punt in the third quarter and being tackled near the Redskins’ sideline. He had two punt returns for 12 yards in place of usual returner Jamison Crowder; the swap was a late decision by the Redskins’ coaching staff.
The question is, will Washington need to add a new receiver if the rookies are unavailable long-term?
“We got about four, five or six different packages that can be pretty efficient,” Gruden said after the game. “Now, with the injuries to Quinn and Sims, we will have to rethink some of our personnel and go from there, but I like where we’re at.”
Another undrafted free agent receiver, Simmie Cobbs Jr., is on the Redskins’ practice squad. In related news, Dez Bryant is still not on an NFL team and tweeted Sunday that he’d like to play for Washington, although New England appears to be his preference.
Late in the game, another rookie, safety Troy Apke, was announced as out with a hamstring injury. But the fourth-round pick was not included in Gruden’s post-game injury update and in the locker room, Apke described it as just a tweak.
