The Washington Nationals series finale with the Chicago Cubs was postponed by rain Sunday afternoon, with the makeup slated for Thursday at 4:05 p.m. at Nationals Park.
All tickets for the rainout game will be honored for the makeup game Thursday, the Nationals announced.
Major League Baseball and the Nationals waited just over three hours before announcing the rainout Sunday, as the game was slated to begin at 1:35 p.m.
The Nationals were slated to have a day off Thursday before beginning a series in Atlanta on Friday. The Cubs begin a three-game series at home Monday with Milwaukee, now come to D.C. to play Thursday and then head back to Chicago to begin a series with the Reds on Friday.
The first-place Cubs are 83-59 and began Sunday 2½ games ahead of the second-place Brewers in the National League Central.
The Nationals won two of three games from the Cubs, winning a doubleheader Saturday 10-3 and 6-5 after losing on Thursday night. The Friday night game was rained out, forcing the twinbill for Saturday.
The bad news is Hurricane Florence is slated to bring more rain, perhaps starting Thursday in the Mid-Atlantic region.
Third-place Washington is 71-72 and entered Sunday 7½ games back of first-place Atlanta and four games behind second-place Philadelphia. The Nationals are slated to begin a three-game series in Philadelphia on Monday night.
The Washington rotation for the series against the Phillies will be Erick Fedde (1-3, 6.00) on Monday, Tanner Roark (8-15, 4.23) on Tuesday and Stephen Strasburg (7-7, 4.04) on Wednesday, all at 7:05 p.m. and all on MASN.
Ace Max Scherzer won his 17th game in the first contest Saturday at Nationals Park against the Cubs.
Scherzer could make at least four more starts this year in an attempt to win 20 games as a Cy Young Award candidate. The right-hander has won the Cy Young Award in the National League the previous two seasons.
No Nationals or Cubs players or managers were available to the media after the Sunday rainout was announced.
