A columnist who was one of the five victims killed during the Capital Gazette shooting in Annapolis, Maryland, will release his first novel posthumously this month, with the proceeds benefitting the gun-control group Everytown for Gun Safety.
“Float Plan” by Rob Hiaasen, who was one of five employees slain on June 28 after a gunman opened fire in the Capital Gazette newsroom, will be released Sept. 15 by Loyola University’s Apprentice House Press.
“It is a privilege to publish Rob’s work,” Kevin Atticks, director of Apprentice House Press, said in a news release. “Float Plan is a long-form example of the writing that endeared so many readers to his columns.”
The publisher said it would donate all proceeds to Everytown for Gun Safety at the request of Hiaasen’s wife, Maria.
“As bittersweet as it is to see Float Plan published posthumously, our family is pleased that readers will get to experience this comic tale of a midlife crisis set in Rob’s beloved Annapolis,” Maria Hiassen said in a statement. “We take great pride and joy in seeing the fulfillment of Rob’s dream — and our dream for him.”
According to the release, “Float Plan” is a “love letter to Annapolis and Baltimore — and to fathers and mothers, old friends, dogs, boats and second chances.” It’s currently available for pre-order on Amazon.
