CHICAGO (AP) - The Chicago Teachers Union has chosen a new president and vice president.
The union’s House of Delegates voted Wednesday for Jesse Sharkey to take over the position held for many years by Karen Lewis. Sharkey was the CTU’s vice president. He has been leading the union while Lewis has battled brain cancer.
Stacy Davis Gates, the union’s political director, was chosen to serve as vice president.
Lewis received national attention during the 2012 teacher strike, when she publicly clashed with Mayor Rahm Emanuel.
The 27,000-member union says it’s gearing up for another contract fight. The current contract expires on June 30, 2019.
The full union will vote for president and vice president in an election next year, when Sharkey and Davis Gates are likely to face opposition.
